A well made Cosmo recipe is a delightfully delicious and crisp cocktail classic. The popularity of this cocktail in the past decade may have lead to its undoing as poorly concocted versions made too quickly, pre-mixed or in mass were passed over the bar to keep up with demand. Often mixed with too much Cranberry, cheap triple-sec or cheap orange liquors, and lime cordial or, even dare mention it, sour mix, instead of fresh lime juice may have contributed to its falling out of fashion, and most certainly diminished its taste.

We have researched many a recipe and find the following our favorite. Dedicated to the Cosmopolitan cocktail as we are you will find many others in our pages. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Cheers!

Cosmopolitan Recipe

Preparation:

  • First, chill your glass, as cold drink is best served in a cold glass, an easy way to do this fill the glass with ice, cover the ice with water and set aside. Next, chill your shaking tin by filling 3/4 of the way with ice and set it aside. TIP: You can chill glasses in your frezzer along with your vodka:)
Next, measure and pour the following ingredients into a mixing glass without ice as not to dilute the ingredients when blending:
  • 1½ ounces of Citrus Vodka
  • ½ ounce Cointreau Brand Liquor
  • ¾ ounce cranberry juice
  • ½ ounce fresh lime juice
  • 2 dashes of orange bitters

Now, pour the ingredients from your mixing glass onto the ice in your shaker. Place the tin portion of the shaker over the mixing glass and give it a little tap to acheive a tight seal between the mixing glass and the mixing tin.

Shake all ingredients well, at least 10 - 15 seconds until the tin shows signs of a sweat.

Fine strain the mixed ingredients into your nicely chilled cocktail or martini glass.

The Finish: Garnish with a flaming orange zest. (video and how to details)

This recipe is adapted from the Cosmo Recipe served to Madonna at the Rainbow Room in 1996 and memorialized in the best selling bar tending book Craft of the Cocktail Clarkson Potter/Publishers 2002 by Dale DeGroff

Amazing, simply amazing taste. Bright citrus, cranberry and lime with hints of orange. Yum:) We have seen other garnishes, lime or lemon used as well. Opting for the flaming orange zest give a hint of oils and flair!

Cosmo Pink

The ideal Cosmo should be just pinky in color and not red or cranberry. The cranberry and lime juices offset the sweetness of Cointreau brand orange liquor with citrus flavored vodka further enhancing the crisp citrus taste. Adding two dashes of orange bitters and flaming orange zest brings together the flavours to create a delightfully interesting mix that is far more complex than its reputation as a ladies only drink. If you've never ventured to add bitters, please give it a try, you just may discover what the fuss is about our best Cosmo recipe.
